CNG: Stakeholders Updates Reps on the Initiative

Key stakeholders in Nigeria’s energy sector have appeared before the House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee on the Implementation of the Federal Government’s Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) policy to give updates and defend the initiative, praising legislative backing and highlighting progress since the removal of fuel subsidies.

At the investigative hearing, PCNGI Program Director Michael Oluwagbemi said CNG conversion centers had increased from 7 to over 300 in 24 states within a year, with $470 million in private investment attracted. So far, 93,000 kits have been acquired, 2,170 vehicles converted, and 5,500 technicians trained. He sued for more legislative funding beyond the ₦130bn and ₦85bn approved for 2024 and 2025, stressing the initiative supports private sector participation.

The Ministry of Petroleum’s Permanent Secretary, Emeka Obi, emphasized CNG’s environmental and economic benefits, while the NNPCL, represented by VP of New Energy, Olalekan Ogunleye, promised affordable pricing 50% lower than petrol or diesel and credited current leadership for renewed momentum. The FRSC, represented by Deputy Corps Marshal Abiodun Akinlade, backed the initiative, urging more legislative and budgetary support for safety enforcement.

Committee Chairman, Hon. Ahmed Jaha, warned against focusing only on conversions without building infrastructure adding that If there’s no support system for the vehicles, the program won’t succeed. Earlier, Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, represented by Hon Sada Soli, said the hearing aimed to ensure the policy is transparent, viable, and beneficial to Nigerians.
